Summary Solaris is designed as a high reliability OS, intended for continuous 24/7 operation and currently focused at the needs of the web and server environments. It also supports multiple virtual processes, multiple processors and different CPU platforms.

2-Sep-2004 Solaris 10 in early testing, first release will support x86, Sparc and AMD64 platforms.
Jan-2003 Solaris 9 for x86 available Includes Sun SunScreen Firewall, and IPlanet directory services.
5-Oct-2002 Sun announces Solaris 9 will be made available for the x86. It will no longer be free, but available for $99 in January 2003 (San Jose Mercury News
